Why You Should Find a Way to Like Your Boss

Who does your review, decides on your raises, and hands out all the best projects? Who has the most influence on your day to day happiness and success at your job? Research shows that our relationship with our supervisor is the number one predictor of our willingness to stay at our job and also has a significant impact on our happiness and success. The next steps in your career, to a large extent, will be determined by your boss and more accurately, by your relationship with your boss. Your boss is not perfect, but neither are you.  Forget their imperfections, no matter how blatant and annoying they may be. Your career depends on it.

Do you want to find reasons to dislike them or reasons to like them?  Some people say 1 in 5 people make good bosses, others believe about every 3rd person makes a good boss. Do you want your career to be limited by whether you get the lucky 20% or 30% of the good bosses, or do you want to be successful no matter which boss you have.

To be more successful, don’t think about all the reasons your boss isn’t great. Think about how you can help them be successful, how you can enjoy being around them, and how you can be successful no matter who you work for. Create a personal relationship with your boss. Schedule lunch with them. Ask them about their families, careers, and hobbies. What is important to them? What do you have in common? The more ways you can connect, the better you will understand them and the easier it will become to appreciate and work with them. Ask about their expectations and do your best to deliver on them. Be a great employee so it will be easy for them to be a great boss. Recognize that they are people to. They have strengths and weaknesses, fears and insecurities, and hopes and dreams. Will you be a perfect boss? Or is it possible you would make mistakes and run into challenges if you were put in charge? Find time to understand their challenges and be a friend. Help them be happy and successful.

Find ways to have a positive relationship with your supervisor and you will be happier and more successful.

Happiness Hack #26 Choose Happiness

Happiness Hack #26     Choose Happiness

Take control of your life and own your happiness rather than being a victim of the people and circumstances around you. According to Sonja Lyubomirsky, only 10% of happiness comes from our circumstances, who we married the size of our house and how much money we have in the bank. 50% comes from our genes or natural disposition and the last 40% of our happiness is based on our choices. We can choose to be upset with our spouse, our boss, or the guy who cuts us off in traffic or we can choose to accept them with all their challenges and find reasons to be happy anyway.

Decide today that you are in control of your life and choose happiness.
